MOD Alliance Webinar#1

For our inaugural webinar, we are thrilled to welcome Dr Eric Raes from the Mindaroo Foundation. Dr Raes, a marine ecologist with a passion for operationalising fieldwork and democratising science, will present on the OceanOmics programme. This pioneering initiative aims to safeguard marine biodiversity by developing and scaling genomic techniques for monitoring marine wildlife, with a strong focus on practical applications for conservation and fisheries management.

The 7th International Marine Conservation Congress

As part of the 7th International Marine Conservation Congress in October, in Cape Town, South Africa, BioEcoOcean project members, Lina Mtwana Nordlund (UU) and Artur Palacz (IOPAN) are organizing a focus group on “Co-Creating a Blueprint for Integrated Ocean Science: Fostering Collaboration for a Sustainable Future.”

Ocean Best Practices System Workshop (OBPS WSVIII)

The objective of the eighth Ocean Best Practices System Workshop (OBPS WSVIII) is to facilitate the cross-cutting primary role of best practices in operational oceanography by promoting dialogues across science and technology.

The agenda framework has plenaries, scheduled for the 14th and 18th of October, as well as Workshop Sessions from 15 to 17 October. The first Workshop Plenary is devoted to the evolution of our Ocean knowledge and policy, and the second one addresses workshop recommendations and future perspectives.

9th EBAME Workshop on Computational Microbial Ecogenomics

We are pleased to inform our community about the upcoming 9th EBAME Workshop on Computational Microbial Ecogenomics, organised by the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (IUEM). This workshop, held in Brest, France, is a significant event for researchers involved in microbial ecology, especially those using next-generation DNA sequencing technologies and computational approaches.

Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16)

COP 16 will be the first Biodiversity COP since the adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework at COP 15 in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada.

At COP 16, governments will be tasked with reviewing the state of implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Parties to the Convention are expected to show the alignment of their National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans (NBSAPs) with the Framework. COP 16 will further develop the monitoring framework and advance resource mobilisation for the Global Biodiversity Framework. Among other tasks, COP 16 is also due to finalize and operationalise the multilateral mechanism on the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from the use of digital sequence information on genetic resources.

25th Biennial Conference on the Biology of Marine Mammals

The theme, “Culture and Conservation: Fishing for Change” shines a light on one of the most significant threat to marine mammals worldwide – interactions with fishing gear. The biennial conference will cover contemporary marine mammal research, conservation and management issues with focus on cultural aspects and human dimensions. Specifically, we aim to identify actions to reduce fishing-related marine mammal mortality, up-skill management agencies and individuals responsible for marine mammal incident response, support capacity building of Indigenous and developing country participants, and facilitate collaboration among scientists, managers, policymakers and Traditional Owners.

AquaEcOmics meeting: Exploring Aquatic Ecology through Omics

Discover the latest advancements in aquatic ecosystem research at the AquaEcOmics meeting, where scientists and managers will delve into biodiversity, functioning, and monitoring using cutting-edge eDNA and multi-Omics methods.

This symposium is organised by INRAEUMR CARRTEL (INRAE USMB), and Université de Savoie Mont Blanc.

2025 UN Ocean Conference

The high-level 2025 United Nations Conference to Support the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development (the 2025 UN Ocean Conference) will be co-hosted by France and Costa Rica and held in Nice, France, from 9 – 13 June 2025.

The overarching theme of the Conference is “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean”. The Conference aims to support further and urgent action to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development and identify further ways and means to support the implementation of SDG 14. It will build on existing instruments to form successful partnerships towards the swift conclusion and effective implementation of ongoing processes that contribute to the conservation and sustainable use of the ocean.
