Call for Nominations – WoRMS Top-Ten Marine Species of 2023

We are excited to share an opportunity for you to engage with the fascinating world of marine taxonomy! The World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) has opened nominations for the Top-Ten Marine Species of 2023, showcasing the incredible diversity of newly discovered marine life.

What is WoRMS Top-Ten Marine Species? This initiative aims to spotlight the remarkable marine species unveiled by taxonomists each year. The 2022 winners spanned the breadth of marine life, from copepods to worms to corals. Learn more about the previous year’s discoveries here.

How Can You Contribute? Nominate your favourite marine species discovered in 2023! The nominated species must be validly published between 01/01/2023 and 31/12/2023, and they can include fossil species. Strong candidates will have compelling stories—unique morphology, interesting names, or societal importance.

Submission Details:

  • Deadline: Friday, 9th February 2024
  • Requirements: Submit the completed form, a PDF of the paper describing the species, and at least one high-quality image (with copyright and ownership information).
