MARCO-BOLO supporting ECSA 61: Bridging science and policy for coastal and estuarine sustainability

MARCO-BOLO is proud to sponsor ECSA 61, the 61st symposium of the Estuarine Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA), taking place 24–27 August 2026 in Brussels, Belgium. This major international conference will focus on “Bridging the gap between science and policy in estuarine and coastal marine biodiversity: the way forward.”

ECSA 61 will address urgent global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution, which threaten the health of coastal ecosystems and society. The conference will bring together a multi-disciplinary community of researchers, policymakers and practitioners to share cutting-edge science and explore solutions for sustainable management of estuaries and coastal seas.

Key themes:

  • Coastal and estuarine biodiversity and ecosystem restoration
  • Blue carbon and carbon storage in coasts and estuaries
  • Nature-based solutions and resilience strategies
  • Socio-economic impacts, governance, and marine spatial planning
  • Science communication and citizen engagement

For the first time, ECSA 61 will feature a Science-meets-Policy Day on 27 August, offering a unique platform for dialogue between scientists and decision-makers to translate research into actionable policies.

As a Horizon Europe project dedicated to marine biodiversity observation and data integration, MARCO-BOLO’s sponsorship reflects its commitment to advancing knowledge and fostering collaboration. MARCO-BOLO coordinator Nicholas Pade (EMBRC) and partner Isabel Sousa-Pinto (CIIMAR) are both serving on the ECSA 61 Scientific Committee. The project will showcase its work on improving biodiversity monitoring and mapping, supporting European and global efforts for healthier oceans.
