The MOD Alliance hosted its fifth webinar on Thursday 27 November 2025, focusing on innovative approaches to mapping blue carbon in European seagrass ecosystems. Organised by MARCO-BOLO, the session highlighted how advanced technologies can improve our understanding of these critical coastal habitats.
MARCO-BOLO partner, Dr. Natalya Gallo, from the Norwegian Research Centre (NORCE) led the webinar, presenting their methods that combine remote sensing, oceanographic data and the newly developed EURO-CARBON database. These tools aim to enhance the accuracy of blue carbon assessments, which are vital for climate mitigation strategies and marine conservation. Seagrass beds play a key role in carbon sequestration while supporting biodiversity and coastal protection. By improving mapping techniques, researchers can better quantify carbon storage and inform policies that safeguard these ecosystems.
If you missed the webinar you can learn more and watch it back here. The webinar is part of the MOD Alliance’s ongoing webinar series which promotes collaboration among the sister projects focused on observing and mapping biodiversity and ecosystems, particularly in coastal and marine environments.
The next webinar will take place on Thursday 5 March 2026, join Josean Fernandes (AZTI) and Mihailo Azhar (Aarhus University) from OBAMA-NEXT as they present AI technology in biodiversity monitoring, find out more and register here.
