Marine Biodiversity Monitoring Harmonisation

The European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), along with a consortium led by ACTeonis conducting a study to enhance marine biodiversity monitoring in Europe. Launched in 2022 and concluding in December 2024, the study aims to address challenges such as fragmented methodologies, inconsistent data quality, and complex data flows that hinder effective policy implementation. Within the context of the EU Mission “Restore our oceans and waters by 2030” and the implementation of EU marine environmental legislation, the study will work with invited stakeholders to propose options for strengthening marine biodiversity monitoring in Europe. It will review methodologies, harmonise data collection, and develop a strategic roadmap, with outcomes shaped by workshops involving key stakeholders.
