New MARCO-BOLO Policy Brief Explores Barriers to Using Marine Biodiversity Data

We are excited to announce the release of a new MARCO-BOLO policy brief: “Addressing Challenges in the Biodiversity Monitoring Data Ecosystem.”

This publication sheds light on the persistent challenges faced by stakeholders when accessing and using marine biodiversity monitoring data. Despite significant advances in data collection, many users still encounter barriers such as inconsistent formats, limited metadata quality, and a lack of user-friendly data products.

To better understand these issues, a stakeholder survey was conducted in 2023 by the University of Vienna as part of the MARCO-BOLO project. The survey gathered insights from a wide range of actors involved in marine biodiversity monitoring and data use across Europe.

The resulting policy brief summarises the key findings and offers practical recommendations to improve data integration, accessibility, and stakeholder engagement. These actions are essential to ensure that biodiversity data can effectively support evidence-based decision-making in marine conservation and policy.

This brief is part of MARCO-BOLO’s broader mission to enhance the use and impact of long-term marine biodiversity observations. It is publicly available and intended for policymakers, data providers, and all stakeholders working to strengthen the marine biodiversity knowledge base.
