Two global data networks, OBIS (the Ocean Biodiversity Information System) and GBIF (the Global Biodiversity Information Facility) have agreed on a joint strategy and action plan to enhance collaboration, improve the quality of marine and coastal biodiversity data, and support research and decision-making on the world’s oceans. This initiative is particularly relevant to MARCO-BOLO as our project also relies on OBIS and GBIF for marine biodiversity data analysis. Furthermore, Ward Appeltans, OBIS programme manager, is part of MARCO-BOLO WP6 (Stakeholder Engagement and Community Integration), and Dan Lear, newly appointed co-chair of the OBIS Steering Group, is part of MARCO-BOLO WP1 (Delivering Essential Biodiversity Variables).
Since their initial collaboration agreement in 2020, OBIS and GBIF have been working together on technical projects and capacity-building initiatives. This new strategy will enhance these efforts, ensuring increased cooperation between the networks while allowing each to maintain its unique identity and mission.
The strategy focuses on expanding the availability of data for marine species listed in the World Register of Marine Species (WoRMS) through platforms like OBIS.org and GBIF.org. Their collaboration history includes the adoption of common standards and tools such as Darwin Core, and the recent addition of new eDNA data streams.
To manage the strategy’s implementation, a joint committee of staff from both networks will annually review and update the action plan. This committee will address both technical and community aspects of the plan and propose new collaborative activities. Future combined conferences and meetings are also planned to promote closer collaboration.
