Read the EMODnet use case about the MPA Europe and MARCO-BOLO projects

The EU Horizon Europe projects, MPA Europe and MARCO-BOLO, are actively engaged in advancing conservation efforts through the creation of species distribution models. These models are essential tools in understanding and protecting biodiversity, and they utilise species occurrence data from EMODnet Biology, which is made available via the European regional OBIS node (EurOBIS) within the OBIS network.

By pooling their expertise in distribution modelling, the MPA Europe and MARCO-BOLO projects have developed and compared models specifically for the harbour porpoise (Phocoena phocoena). This collaborative case study highlights that various modelling approaches can effectively depict the distribution of this species, offering valuable insights for conservation strategies.

This initiative underscores the importance of data sharing and technical collaboration in enhancing our understanding of marine species distribution, ultimately contributing to more informed and effective conservation efforts.
